"First there came four pretty daughters
For this small town Southern man
Then a few years later came another
A boy, he wasn't planned"
For this small town Southern man
Then a few years later came another
A boy, he wasn't planned"
I was listening to this song with my family recently and tried to explain its message to the kids.
On the way home from church today, Carrie and Sydney were talking about how cool would it be if Aunt Christy could find a boy named Sam to marry. When I asked them why, they said it was "so we could have an Uncle Sam to stand for."
You may see where this is going and/or already know the song, but in case you don't, its chorus says this:
"And he bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle SamAnd he only loved one woman
(He) was always proud of what he had
He said his greatest contribution
Is the ones you leave behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town Southern man"
We had a little talk about who Uncle Sam is and why it mentions him in the song. How embarrassing that we've worked for Uncle Sam for five years and our kids didn't know this nickname until just today.
Still, Christy, we think it would be cool if you married someone named Sam. We would certainly stand for him!
